“Monsignor Marcello Manfroni” Museum Of Wooden Processional Objects

The Museum of wooden processional objects is located next to the Sanctuary of Madonna della Misericordia. The Catholic brotherhood named Confraternita del SS.mo Sacramento looks after the treasures in the Sanctuary.

The Museum was opened in December 2001 and the brotherhood wanted to dedicate it to Monsignor Marcello Manfroni. It was completely restored between 1999 and 2000, under the direction of the architect Roberta Luciani.

The set-up occupies two floors, where also canvas, furniture, sacred vestments, ancient volumes, registers, prints, and silverware are kept.

Inside the church of Madonna della Misericordia stands out the wooden statue of the Virgin Mary realized by Giovanni Antonio Aquilano in the sixteenth century. Originally, in 1525, it was located inside the church of Santa Maria in Piazza (which later became the church of Madonna della Misericordia) after a miraculous event.

The statue by the Abruzzese School is placed inside a recess in the apsis behind the main altar. The statue of the Child was probably lost during a fire recorded in 1538. Then it was replaced with its picture by Giulio Tomassy.

The wooden objects date back to the seventeenth-eighteenth century. Of the same period, the canvas depicting cardinal Antonio Doria, guardian of the local community, and the others depicting the priests Don Felice Silvestrini and Don Giovanni Siciliani, clerics from Petriolo.

Some other canvas by the Lorenzo Lotto School and by local artists: a painting titled “Angelo con scapolare della Madonna del Carmelo and a painting titled “Annunciazione” by Andrea de Magistris (both of the sixteenth century).

Among the silverware, the Museum hosts a precious ostensory (1782) by the Macerata-based goldsmith Domenico Piani.

Moreover: reliquaries, votive offerings, embroidered silks, goblets, sacred vestments in silk and gold, crosses, lanterns and prioral canes owned by the brotherhood.
