Giuliano Catalani

Born in Petriolo on February 26th, 1582 – Died on September 12th, 1656
Son of Martino di Lattanzio and Donna Orfina, Sir Fabio Filetico’s daughter. Giuliano Catalani belonged to one of the best local families.
He celebrated his marriage with Quintia Siciliani (1581-1613) on May 28th, 1600. Giuliano and Quintia had many children, but they all died as infants, except for Marino (1607-1673).
Quintia died. Later, Giuliano celebrated his second marriage with Maria, Giovanni Lauri’s daughter, on November 14th, 1620. Giuliano and Maria had eleven children.
Known as one of the most powerful landowners of Petriolo’s territory, Giuliano Catalani held several public positions working for the local community. He was appreciated for his wise and mild-mannered disposition. During the famine between 1620 and 1625, Giuliano Catalani worked strongely to supply the local community with wheat. He also lent money to poor and needy people.
In 1630, to respect the willing of his dead brother, Don Quintilio Catalani (provost for the Church of St Martin), Giuliano Catalani built an altar dedicated to St Anthony of Padua inside the Church of Santa Maria della Misericordia. Catalani family considered St Anthony of Padua as their guardian.
On May 8th, 1656, during the visit of the bishop of Fermo, cardinal Carlo Gualtieri, Giuliano Catalani sent the formal obligation to maintain the altar even for the descendants. He also stated to celebrate Mass on that altar twice a week. The altar dedicated to St Anthony of Padua was formally acquired by Catalani family, and Catalani’s noble crest was put on the altar.
Giuliano Catalani died in Petriolo at the age of 74 on September 12th, 1656.
